Fall Semester

Hello again. Here are some images from projects I am working on at school.

First...If anyone remember the Russian woman and panther characters that I posted sometime last spring, I decided to use them for my senior thesis. These are just some illustrations I did to warm up to the graphic style I hope to use for the film, as well as a teaser of one of the layouts enjoy!

The rest are from my Animation Collective class, were i was assigned to concept artwork and character designs for a Hybrid 2D/3D music video the class is putting together. I'm in charge of the male and female characters that are trapped in a labyrinth. My Friend Maxine Is overseeing the Minotaur Character, but I coupldn't help doing a drawing anyway. I will probably end up doing more concept work than will appear in the final film, this is just a start:

Orthogrpahics to be modeled in 3d: Final designs will include body tattoos and color which i haven't finished yet.

Bears in the woods

I almost forgot to post these. here are some stills and the final video from this Summer's forray into stop motion.

Busy Bee

Looks like it's going to be a busy summer! Things are picking up at school and there might be a possibility of some freelance work, so for the occasion, i've started putting together a more streamlined web portfolio on carbonmade.com

I haven't gotten around to making it look all fancy yet, but at least now there's something to look at:

Look, it's awesome again

I hadn't realized this blog hadn't seen any sweet visual action since April 13th. Oops! Well, I've actually had a lot going on since then. I managed to get through finals, which is very exciting, but  sadly, my grandfather passed away as well, so i had to get back to Portland for the funeral. My mother said she put some of my artwork up on the bulletin board in his hospital room, which made him really happy, especially since it gave him a reason to talk to every doctor, nurse, anyone who came in his room. He was always a people person, so it was comforting for me to know I could at least be with him in that way, if i couldn't see him in person before he died.

I guess the good news is that now I have a bunch of stuff to put up. Here are some various layouts and background studies i did for my Siberian project:

The last four were rather fun, i did the black and white version first, and tried adding the color in photoshop using layers and blending modes. This technique definitely has it's pros and cons, but i really liked how the night color study came out.

And here is just some random sketchbook stuff, and life drawing. bowchickabowow.

That's all for now. I'll be posting a few animation samples up next, as soon as I figure out how to get them online. Also, there will probably be some more sketches and such up next week, after i go back to school and get to use some scanners. Check back soon!

OSKAR kittehs!

The rest of the character sheets from my Layout and Production Design class, featuring Oskar, the feline companion to my little Russian gal i posted the other day. Not as sharp a design, but for the assignment, it works.  I guess it would help if i drew more big cats....it's hard to do character design when you're trying to learn how to draw something at the same time, lol. But seriously, drawing big pather-cats with hammer and sickles on their chest has got to be about as fun as crazy rogue military communist villian chicks any day.

I really had to resist putting a little fez on him, srsly.

P.S. If i hadn't mentioned it before, i really really like feedback/critique of any kind on my work, so don't hesitate to leave a comment, even anonymously (although it's still nice to sign your name or something at the bottom so i know you're not like...some crazy android feedback machine. but wouldn't that still be okay anyway? i digress...).

Hey, even if you only do it so I can follow your blog, as long as you return the favor, that's fine too!

okay, enough of my blathering. durdur.

in between sleeping and eating

Two projects for school, collectively eating up my time :D
But, actually, all my assignments so far have been pretty fun/interesting.

First up, a model sheet for my Layout Production and Design class:

There's another character sheet to go with it, a panther named oscar, but i am too awesome to have finished those on time (or at all). We'll probably get to see him in the next update.

For my children's book illustration class, we illustrated a nursery rhyme. I choose "Old Mother Hubbard" and took the oppertunity to model her dog after my charlie, who passed away last year.

Shh, don't tell

Officially i am too busy with finals to be posting on this sketchblog. Unofficially, i am using any excuse to take a break, so here's an animation really from my school, just for fun. One of my animations get's a brief cameo, ahaha.

Super

For a final in character animation, we were given a set of designs for a male super hereo team, and asked to come up with a female character. I think she's pretty cute.

Here she is in the line up, with some colors I threw together. I don't really know where the designs for the other characters are from, but i didn't come up with them.
Hruk. So, in other news, Riley and I are going to be hitting up CTN Animation Expo. I'm really looking forward to it, but i feel obligated to have something to bring along with me, so i'm in the process of making business cards. I think it might be cheaper to make some simple ones in Photoshop and print them out on some extra cardstock i have laying around.

Playing around with some of the images on my harddrive at school, this is what i came up with:

We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhkay. Let's pretend none of that just happened. What happened you ask? Alright, good.

We're getting towards the end of (old) old stuff--here we have some doodles and a few finished pieces i did for/during animation last semester.
